Backup The Godfather – All Time in Top-5 Greatest Film List

The Godfather, the 1972 American crime film is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema. It was based on Puzo's 1969 novel of the same title. The film, spanning the years 1945 to 1955, centers on the transformation of Michael Corleone (Pacino) from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia boss while also chronicling the family under the patriarch Vito Corleone (Brando). The film won three Oscars and 7 other nominations in 1972. And it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1990. The film was originally budgeted for $2 million. But you know what, it ultimately earned an equivalent exhibition gross of nearly 300 million dated start from December 13, 1972.

The Godfather Reviews

The Godfather review
  • One of Hollywood's greatest critical and commercial successes, The Godfather gets everything right; not only did the movie transcend expectations, it established new benchmarks for American cinema. - Rottentomatoes.com
  • Although the movie is three hours long, it absorbs us so effectively it never has to hurry. There is something in the measured passage of time as Don Corleone hands over his reins of power that would have made a shorter, faster moving film unseemly. - Roger Ebert
  • To permit us a glimpse at The Mob, with all of its ethnic insularity, is like giving a chronic gambler a chance to wander above the false mirrors that overlook every casino. - Gene Siskel from Chicago Tribune
  • The film is pretty shocking in the way every death occurs almost instantaneously, and as it spans ten years so many different things happen and every minute of it is great entertainment. It's a well-made and entertaining film that is only the first part of a trilogy, but it stands on its own as a wonderful film in its own right. If you haven't seen it, what are you waiting for? This was one acclaimed film that didn't disappoint. - SJ_1 from IMDB
  • Terrific performances and the perfect brooding atmosphere make it a truly outstanding work. - Sky Movies
  • With the themes of family and loyalty, this film is a must see for any movie fan. - Kevin Carr from 7M Pictures
The Godfather 2

The Godfather DVD disc was released on Oct.9, 2001 in a package which contained all three films. The DVD also held a Corleone family tree, a "Godfather" timeline, and footage of the Academy Award acceptance speeches. After a restoration of the first two films, The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on September 23, 2008 from a transfer by Robert A. Harris of Film Preserve. The Blu-ray Disc box set (four discs) includes high-definition extra features on the restoration and film. They are included on Disc 5 of the DVD box set (five discs). Other extras are held over from Paramount's 2001 DVD release, although slight differences obtain between the repurposed extras on the DVD and Blu-ray Disc sets; the HD box has more content.
