Backup Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro is the first feature film of Miyazaki’s career. Miyazaki's first directed feature provides an interesting bookend with his purported last film, THE WIND RISES. Both are stripped of his (literal) magic and outright fantasy, yet what remains may offer the clearest glimpse into the idiosyncrasies that make Miyazaki one of the best filmmakers of the 20th century. His vision of the European backdrop of Lupin's caper is a brilliant reversal of Western orientalism, in this case filtering the West through an Eastern premise.

The Castle of Cagliostro

Castle of Cagliostro follows master thief Lupin the Third as he attempts to recover from mistakenly stealing a load of counterfeit bills from a casino. Synopsis of this film from IMBD says it is a flamboyant thief and his gang struggle to free a princess from an evil count's clutches and to learn the hidden secret to a fabulous treasure that she holds part of a key to. What follows is what Steven Spielberg called the greatest adventure film ever made.

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro Reviews

  • This one should fare nearly as well with animation fans of any age, provided they are unwavering in their devotion to the form and do not think 100 minutes is an awfully long time. - Janet Maslin from New York Times
  • Do you get the idea? This is a great, great movie, and the dubbed version is (amazingly enough) almost as good as nsubbed versions. No matter who might be in the crowd, you can't go wrong with The Castle of Cagliostro. - themanime.org
  • A lot of fun, thanks largely to the breezy character of Lupin at the center. - Tim Brayton from Antagony & Ecstasy
  • Aside from the corny 70's music, this movie was fun every step of the way. It was funny, romantic, dramatic, action-packed: everything! So I guess that sums it up well. GET THIS MOVIE! I'm sure you will find at least something in it that will entertain you. - princesszandra from IMDB

About this movie, Marc Fortier from FEEL.com said that the Castle of Cagliostro is a film first, and an anime second. The animation is a little dated and underwhelming when compared to Miyazaki's later works, but "Castle of Cagliostro" remains a wildly fun action/adventure flick that is sure to entertain people whether they are fans of anime or not.
